The Archipelbuurt is not just any neighbourhood to us, but our home base. Our office is located on Bankastraat, right in the heart of this characterful area, also known as the Indische buurt. The neighbourhood borders the city centre yet feels calm and secluded, with a distinctly international character.

Character of the neighbourhood

The Archipel appeals to residents who want to combine city living with peace and space. On weekdays you reach the centre by bike in minutes; at weekends you stroll through leafy streets with an understated elegance.

The neighbourhood owes its name to streets named after islands and archipelagos of the former Dutch colonies. That historical link gives the area something special: the street names tell a story in themselves.

Properties and architecture

Walking through the Archipel, the architecture immediately stands out. The area was largely built around the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, with stately neo-Renaissance buildings full of detail: sculpted facades, bay windows, turrets and stained glass. You will find spacious townhouses and characteristic courtyard homes.

The properties are generally large and privately owned; rental homes are less common here. Prices are above the average for The Hague, confirming the area’s popularity. With this type of monumental property, expertise matters. Thanks to our building-surveying and notarial background, we assess not only the value but also the maintenance condition, renovation potential and legal particulars of a home.

Shops and amenities

Daily life revolves around Bankaplein, Frederikstraat, Javastraat and the charming Denneweg, with their specialty shops, restaurants and terraces. For everyday groceries there are local shops within walking distance.

For more, you can cycle to Noordeinde and the old town in a few minutes. The proximity of several international schools also makes the Archipel especially attractive to expat families.

Sport and recreation

The neighbourhood’s broad avenues are ideal for an evening walk or a leisurely bike ride. For more space, Plein 1813, Park Sorghvliet, the Scheveningse Bosjes and the Westbroekpark are within easy reach, popular with runners and walkers alike.

Why live in the Archipelbuurt?

The Archipel appeals to those who value peace and class without giving up urban amenities. The combination of historic architecture, green streets and an international, residential atmosphere makes it one of the most attractive addresses in The Hague. As an estate agent with an office in the heart of the neighbourhood, we know the Archipel like no other.
